Most solopreneurs spend their first few months of AI automation on the wrong tasks. They pick whatever feels most frustrating — not what’s actually worth systematizing.
Here’s the test I run before automating anything. Takes ten seconds. Saves months of wasted setup.
The 3-Question Automation Test
Before you build, run this:
- Does it happen at least once a week?
- Does it follow a predictable pattern?
- Would you do it the same way every time?
Yes to all three? Automate it.
No to even one? Keep it manual for now.
What Passes the Test (Real JonOps Examples)
Here’s what makes it through the filter in my stack:

⚡ GET THE AI EDGE
Weekly AI tips that actually save you time and money. No fluff, no hype — just what works.
- Publishing daily blog posts — happens every morning, same pipeline, same steps ✅
- Sorting and categorizing emails — daily rhythm, clear rules, consistent action ✅
- Scheduling social media — weekly cadence, predictable platforms, same format ✅
- Competitor content monitoring — weekly, same sources, same extraction logic ✅
Those four tasks alone run 40+ automated actions per week across my containers. I don’t touch them. They’re done before I open my laptop.
What Fails the Test (Keep These Manual)
- Strategic decisions — “Should I launch a product?” — not repeatable, not predictable
- Client or partner calls — every conversation is unique, requires full human judgment
- Creative direction — you can use AI as the tool, but your vision has to lead
- One-off projects — if it only happens once, setup cost is not worth it
The most common mistake operators make: trying to automate decisions when they should be automating execution. AI agents are execution engines — they need a predictable process to follow, not a judgment call to make.
The takeaway: Before you build anything — even a simple n8n workflow — run the three-question test. Repeatable + predictable + consistent = automate it. Everything else? That’s where your human judgment actually compounds.
Want to see the full execution layer in action? Here’s how I built a managed AI agent that handles the execution side entirely.
