Tip Tuesday: Give Your AI Agent a Memory (Read Yesterday Before You Write Today)

daily tip tuesday agent memory 20260818

Here’s the difference between an AI agent that gets smarter every day and one that runs in circles: memory. Most people wire up an agent to do a task, then let it wake up every morning with total amnesia. It repeats yesterday’s topic, re-learns the same lesson, and re-makes the same mistake — forever. Today’s tip fixes that in about ten minutes.

The tip: make your agent read yesterday before it writes today

Give your agent two plain-text files and one rule. The first file is a running log — after every job, the agent appends a few lines: what it did, what worked, and anything surprising it hit. The second file is a short index of hard-won lessons (“the queue field is called Queued, not Queue“; “that API returns 401 when the token’s revoked”). The rule: read both before starting any task.

That’s the entire mechanism. No vector database, no fancy framework. Just a habit of reading its own notes first — the same thing a good employee does when they sit down at their desk.

Why it matters

An agent with memory stops repeating itself. Mine checks its last seven posts before writing a new one, so it never publishes the same tip twice in a week. It remembers that an integration has been down for eight days instead of “discovering” the outage fresh every morning and pinging me in a panic. And when it learns a quirk — an odd field name, a rate limit, a formatting gotcha — that lesson sticks and compounds. Week one it’s clumsy; week six it moves like it’s been doing the job for years.

Do this today

  1. Create two files: a running log and a short lessons index.
  2. Add one line to your agent’s instructions: “Read both files before you start.”
  3. End every task with: “Append what you did and anything you learned.”

The takeaway: An agent without memory is a very fast intern who quits every night. Give it a notebook it actually reads, and it starts behaving like a teammate. Pair this with the habit of building agents that fail soft, not loud, and your morning inbox gets a lot quieter.

Want the reliability half of this equation? Start your week with a quick 20-minute credential check so your agent’s memory has something to run on.
