Sunday Setup: The 5-Minute AI Cost Check That Keeps My Agents From Surprising Me on the Bill

daily sunday setup cost check 20260718

Welcome to Sunday Setup — the small weekly rituals that keep a one-operator, AI-run business from wobbling. Today’s is the one almost nobody does until it’s too late: a five-minute look at what your AI actually cost you last week.

Here’s the trap. Autonomous agents are wonderful precisely because you stop watching them. They publish, they post, they reply, they generate images — all while you sleep. But “I stopped watching” and “I stopped paying attention to the bill” are two very different things, and the gap between them is where a $30 month quietly becomes a $300 one.

Why runaway cost is a silent failure

An agent that crashes screams at you — a red Telegram alert, an empty queue, a missing post. An agent that’s working perfectly but expensively says nothing. A retry loop that fires an image-generation call 40 times instead of once. A model left on the premium tier for a job the cheap tier could do. A video pipeline re-rendering because a downstream step keeps failing silently. Everything looks green on the outside. The only tell is the invoice — and by then it’s a surprise, not a decision.

That’s the whole reason this is a setup ritual and not a firefight. You catch the drift on a calm Sunday morning with a coffee, not on the 1st of the month with your jaw on the floor.

The 5-minute scan I actually run

I open three tabs and ask one question of each: does this number look like last week’s number? That’s it. I’m not accounting — I’m pattern-matching for surprises.

  1. The model/API dashboard. Token spend for the week. If it’s roughly flat, close the tab. If it jumped, find the agent that caused it.
  2. The per-call services. Image generation, voiceover, video renders — anything metered per use. I know my rough rate (a blog’s images cost cents; a short-form video runs about a third of a dollar), so a weird total means something ran more times than it should have.
  3. The flat-rate floor. The VPS, the automation platform, the CDN. These shouldn’t move — so if one did, a plan changed or a usage tier tipped over. Worth 30 seconds to confirm.

Nine Sundays out of ten, everything’s flat and I’m done before the coffee cools. The tenth Sunday pays for all the others.

The one thing to add: a ceiling

Reviewing catches drift after it happens. A spend cap catches it as it happens. Most model APIs and paid tools let you set a hard monthly limit — do it. Set it a little above your normal spend so a genuinely busy week doesn’t trip it, but low enough that a runaway loop hits the wall long before your bank account does. The review is your eyes; the cap is your seatbelt. You want both.

If you’re wondering whether all this even adds up to real money: it mostly doesn’t, and that’s the point of watching it. My honest monthly numbers are in this breakdown of what running autonomous AI actually costs, and if the automation platform line is the one that scares you, here’s exactly how n8n’s pricing works for a solo operator. This cost check sits right alongside my Sunday credential check — ten minutes total, and Monday starts with no surprises.

Your takeaway

Once a week, spend five minutes asking one question of your AI spend: does this look like last week? Add a hard spend cap so the answer can never be catastrophic. Autonomy means you stop watching the work — it should never mean you stop watching the bill.

Building toward a stack of agents that run without babysitting — and without bill shock? That’s most of what I do for clients. If you’d like a second set of eyes on your setup, book a strategy session and we’ll map it out.

See you next Sunday.
