Welcome to FAQ Friday, where I answer the question I get more than any other from solopreneurs and small teams eyeing autonomous AI. This week’s is the one nobody wants to ask out loud because it sounds naive: “Okay, but how much does it actually cost to run an AI agent every month?” Fair question. Here’s the honest, receipts-first answer.
The short answer: less than you think, and it’s three buckets
Running an autonomous agent isn’t one bill — it’s three small ones stacked together:
- Model tokens — what you pay Anthropic (or whoever) every time the agent thinks. This is the part people fear, and it’s usually the smallest.
- Infrastructure — a cheap VPS or container to run it on. Mine is a single box running a whole fleet.
- Tools & APIs — the paid services the agent touches: image generation, an email verifier, a scheduler. A few dollars each.
The real receipt
One of my brand agents wakes up on a cron schedule, writes and publishes a blog post, generates seven images, schedules a week of social posts, and goes back to sleep — every single day. The token cost for a day like that lands in the low single digits of dollars. The images run roughly four to eight cents each. The VPS is a fixed monthly cost I split across ten-plus brands. Add it up and one fully autonomous content-and-social operation costs less per month than a couple of restaurant dinners.
The trap isn’t the price — it’s runaway tokens from an agent with no guardrails. That’s exactly why I scope every build in planning mode before it burns budget, and why I don’t spin up a team of parallel agents when one will do. Cost control is a design decision, not an accident.

The reframe that matters
Don’t compare the agent’s bill to zero. Compare it to the thing it replaces. A part-time virtual assistant doing this work costs hundreds to thousands a month, needs onboarding, sleeps, and takes holidays. The agent costs a fraction of that, runs at 3 a.m., and never forgets a step — as long as you wrap it in the right guardrails so it stays honest overnight.
The takeaway: the real cost of running an AI agent isn’t the monthly bill — it’s the time you spend not building one. Start with a single task, watch the actual numbers for a week, and scale only what pays for itself.
