Tool Thursday: Instantly API — 19 “Opportunities” Worth $19,000, and Every One Wanted Payment or a Link Swap

Instantly API cold email outreach: teal envelopes going out, blank price tags coming back

Every evening one of my agents picks five blogs, matches each one to a post of mine they might want to link, and loads them into a cold email campaign. It runs on the Instantly API: nine sending inboxes across five of my domains, a three-step sequence (day 0, day 3, day 7), and a hard cap of 5 emails a day. Nobody touches it by hand. That’s the good news.

The bad news is the dashboard. This morning it said my backlink campaign has 19 opportunities worth $19,000. I read every reply. None of that money is coming to me.

The receipt: what Instantly counted vs what people wrote

Here’s the campaign as of 2026-10-22, read straight off the API:

  • 486 leads loaded since July 1. 375 have been emailed, so 111 are still waiting for a first email.
  • 155 unique opens, 13 unique clicks, 26 bounces, 37 replies.
  • 19 leads marked Interested, valued at a flat $1,000 each. That’s where the $19,000 comes from.

Then I pulled the actual inbound emails: 41 messages from 28 senders. Six of those senders weren’t replies at all. There were four support-desk auto-acknowledgements, one out-of-office, and one company that has sent me eight whiteboard ads since I emailed them.

That left 22 humans. 20 of them wanted to be paid. The quotes ran from $20 to $750 for a single link or guest post, plus one $1,200 “top 10 listing”. Two pointed me to a paid marketplace instead. One followed up three times and then offered a discount. The other 2 wanted a link swap. Free links earned: zero.

So the 19 “opportunities” aren’t a pipeline. They’re a price list for things I’d be paying for. Instantly isn’t wrong about the replies. It counts what it can see, and a rate card looks exactly like an interested reply from the outside.

Why I still use it (and recommend it)

Instantly does the part that’s hard to build yourself. It rotates sends across inboxes, spaces out follow-ups and stops the sequence the moment someone replies. My agent only has to do three things: push leads, read replies and report. The build vs buy math on AI outreach lands the same way: buy the sending, build the judgment.

Three things that bit my agent on the v2 API, so they don’t bite yours:

  1. The lead field is campaign, not campaign_id. Get it wrong and the lead is created but attached to nothing. My agent now reads the response back and checks that campaign is filled in on every push.
  2. Python’s default client got blocked. Plain urllib calls came back 403 until we sent a normal browser user agent. curl with the same header works fine.
  3. The daily limit counts follow-ups too. 5 a day means 5 emails, not 5 new people. With a three-step sequence, most of the slots go to day 3 and day 7 nudges. That’s why 111 leads are still queued. Loading 5 a day into a campaign that sends 5 a day only works if nobody gets a follow-up.

Do this today

  1. Pull the reply bodies, not the counters. GET /api/v2/emails?campaign_id=…&email_type=received returns the actual messages. Ten minutes of reading tells you more than the analytics page.
  2. Sort replies into four buckets: yes, no, wants money, not a reply. Count the last two separately. On my campaign they’re 26 of 28 senders.
  3. Decide your paid-link policy before the agent meets its first rate card. Mine doesn’t have one yet, so every quote ends up as a task for me. A one-line rule (“never pay,” or “pay up to $X for a dofollow link on a relevant site”) would let the agent sort these on its own.

The takeaway: a dashboard counts responses, not results. Instantly sent my emails reliably for four months. Whether any of it worked was a question only the reply bodies could answer, and nobody was reading them.

Same lesson, other tools: DataForSEO said “Ok.” while it refused to work, and 195 approval tasks waited on a human who never came. If you want outreach that reports what actually happened, book a strategy session and we’ll map it to your stack.
