It sends you a morning brief, checks your connected apps every few hours, and asks before it sends, pays, signs or deletes anything. Which raises the obvious question: should you let an agent check your stuff without being asked?

I’ve run proactive agents for four months. Here’s what they actually find.

The short answer: yes, if the check is cheap and the hit lands somewhere you look

A proactive AI agent is worth it when two things are true. Checking costs almost nothing, and the rare thing it finds goes straight to someone who acts on it. Most checks find nothing. That’s normal. The failure mode isn’t the quiet runs. It’s the loud run that nobody reads.

What counts as a “proactive” AI agent?

One that runs on a clock instead of waiting for your prompt. Duet does it with “every few hours”. My fleet does it with a schedule file: four of my agents exist only to look at something and report back. One sorts my inbox twice a day. One reads my task list every night. One watches social threads for replies. One audits every other agent’s run at 23:35.

How often does a proactive check actually find something?

I counted. Here are the last 30 days of run logs (2026-09-23 to 10-22) for those four watchers. That’s 150 scheduled check-ins:

Inbox agent: 60 checks, 529 emails sorted. 1 was a customer and 10 were partnership pitches. So 11 emails, about 2%, needed a reply from me. 65 were money mail (invoices, receipts, payouts), which it is never allowed to answer. The other 453 were noise it labeled and left alone.

Task-list agent: 30 nightly checks. I left it 零 tasks. The only card it ever found was filed by another agent.

Social follow-up agent: 30 checks, 0 replies found. That’s not because nobody replied. It’s because none of the 474 drafts it watches over were ever posted.

Watchdog: 30 nightly audits. At least 6 caught something real: a failed run, a slot that never fired, an Asana outage, and posts from a different project showing up on my X account.

So the hit rate is low. But any one of the watchdog’s six catches was worth more to me than all the quiet runs combined. That’s the whole bet with a proactive agent: you pay for a lot of quiet so you don’t miss the loud.

What should a proactive agent be allowed to do without asking?

Read, sort, label, draft and report. Not send, pay, sign or delete. Duet draws its line in the same place mine does. My inbox agent has sorted 529 emails this month and replied to none of them. It drafts, and money mail goes to me as a task. One catch: that rule has to live in the agent’s permissions, not just its prompt. Mine lived only in the prompt until I went and checked.

Will checking every few hours burn through my plan?

It can. Duet’s background checks count toward your plan limits, so “every few hours” has a price even when it finds nothing. Start with the slowest cadence that still beats you doing it by hand. Twice a day is plenty for most inboxes. My task-list check runs once a night, and that was 30 checks for zero tasks. A weekly cadence would have lost me nothing.

Who reads what it finds?

This is where proactive agents quietly fail. A check that finds something and files it into a queue nobody opens is just a slower way to miss it. My agents have filed 195 approval tasks I’ve never closed. Before you turn on a proactive agent, decide where its findings land. Then make it a place you already look every morning.

今天就做這件事

Pick one thing you check by hand more than once a day. Inbox, orders, bookings. That’s your first proactive check.

Write the “never without asking” list first: send, pay, sign, delete, plus anything with your name on it.

Choose where findings land. One place, one you already open, with a deadline on anything that needs you.

Count after 30 days. How many checks found something, and how many of those did you act on? If the second number is zero, the problem isn’t the agent.

要點： a proactive AI agent mostly finds nothing, and that’s fine. What isn’t fine is when it finds something and you never see it.

Not sure how many watchers you need?
