Mine isn’t a fancy AI orchestration platform. It’s cron: a scheduler older than most of the internet, free on every Mac and Linux box, and quietly running an empire of agents while I’m asleep in Taipei.

If you’re building anything that needs to happen on a schedule without you clicking a button, this is the tool to learn first.

What cron actually is

cron is a background timer. You give it two things: a schedule and a command. It runs the command on that schedule, forever, without asking. That’s the whole idea. No dashboard, no monthly fee, no vendor lock-in.

The schedule is five fields — minute, hour, day, month, weekday. This line says “run at 7:00 every morning”:

0 7 * * * /home/agent/run-skill.sh daily-contribution

That single line is why this very post exists. A cron entry fired at 07:00, woke up an agent, and told it: write today’s tip and publish it. No human in the loop.

Why it matters (the receipt)

Right now I run 10+ autonomous brand containers. Each one has a crontab — a list of “at this time, run that skill.” Blog at midnight, social posts at noon, email triage twice a day, a watchdog at 23:00 to check nothing broke. Stack those schedules across ten brands and you get hundreds of jobs a day, all firing on a tool that costs exactly nothing and has been battle-tested since 1975.

The lesson for solopreneurs: you don’t need an expensive platform to make things happen while you sleep. You need one reliable trigger. cron is that trigger.

How to start today

On a Mac or Linux machine, type
crontab -e
, add a line like the one above, and save. Done. Your command now runs on schedule.

Not comfortable in a terminal? You have no-code options that use the exact same idea:

cron-job.org — a free website that pings any URL on a schedule. Perfect for triggering an n8n or Make webhook.

GitHub Actions — add a
schedule:
trigger to a workflow and GitHub runs it for free.

Start with one job. A daily backup, a weekly report email, a nightly script that checks your queue. Prove the heartbeat works before you wire ten of them together.

The one gotcha

cron will happily run your job twice if you’re not careful — a retry, an overlap, a machine that reboots mid-run. If that command charges a card or sends an email, running it twice is a real bill. So make every scheduled job 可以安全運行兩次 before you trust it overnight. And pair it with a Telegram alert so you actually know it ran — silence isn’t the same as success.

要點： automation isn’t magic. It’s a free 50-year-old scheduler firing a command you already wrote. Set up your first cron job today, and you’ve built the heartbeat everything else hangs off of.

Want the whole nightly pipeline this heartbeat drives?
